Public Information Center

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), committed to developing transportation improvements that best balance safety, transportation needs, the environment, community concerns and cost, will hold a Virtual Public Information Center (PIC) to provide local residents, public officials, businesses and the general public with information on the Route 179 Bridge over Back Brook (Ringoes Creek) Bridge Replacement project. You are encouraged to actively participate by providing comments by mail or email. 

The Meeting

The Public Information Center will be held virtually. Please visit this website any time from February 13 – February 27, 2026, to learn more about the project and to leave comments.

You will have an opportunity to review a presentation, exhibits of relevant information, submit questions, and leave feedback. Property owners with rental units are advised that tenants are also invited and encouraged to participate.

Project Information

Background

The purpose of this project is to replace the bridge which carries Route 179 over Back Brook, also known as Ringoes Creek. Built in 1929, the structure is nearly 100 years old and is in need of replacement. The concrete culvert structure is in poor condition. 

The Proposed Project

The Route 179 over Back Brook Bridge Replacement will include demolition of the entire structure and replacement with a new concrete frame. The bridge will be constructed in two stages following Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques. New bridge parapets, upstream retaining walls, and approach guide rails will be installed. 

Traffic Impacts / Mitigation Strategies

In order to minimize construction impacts on the roadway and motoring public, two stages of traffic control will be used without the need for any detour. Both the northbound and southbound traffic will use a shared lane facilitated by temporary traffic signals located on each approach to the bridge construction work zone. This alternating two-way, one-lane concept will provide acceptable levels of service with minimal queuing. A pedestrian / bicycle detour will be in effect utilizing Melbourn Lane and John Ringo Road.

Environmental

Design of terrestrial passage for the wood turtle is being incorporated into the design of the structure according to Division of Fish and Wildlife habitat connectivity requirements. The bridge will be slightly lengthened to accommodate a terrestrial wildlife passage in the way of built-up shelves on each side of the stream under the bridge.
